Have you heard of 'Hair Love?'

Skip the donation plate at church - this natural hair short film needs it more.

Hair Love is the upcoming animated short film about an African American man doing his seven-year-old daughter’s hair for the first time. With an animation and production team mainly comprised of people of color, featuring a few big names such as Disney-Pixar vet Frank Abney (who is executive producing), Hair Love is the film Gotham needs but doesn’t deserve. Hair Love is an act of grace and mercy from the anointed.

Written by writer/director/Black Twitter celeb Matthew A. Cherry, Hair Love looks and sounds absolutely adorable, not to mention extremely relevant. We’ve seen a major upswing in fathers proudly learning how to do their children’s hair and we’re here for the movement. Hair Love is the perfect film to celebrate every Dad out there stepping up to the kinky, coiled, coconut-oiled plate. Not to mention, it gives much-needed visibility and representation to natural hair on both men and women with Zuri, the daughter, having a head full of beautiful coils and Stephen, the father, having shoulder length dreadlocks.

It’s been proven that representation is crucial to child development and helps in making children feel visible and like they belong in society. Hair Love gives visibility not only to black children with natural hair but also to black fathers and every man overstepping toxic ideas of "masculinity" in order to further contribute and serve their family - all themes we could stand to see more of in the media.

Unfortunately, the film isn’t completely a “go” yet. Hair Love is currently in the fundraising phase with a Kickstarter Campaign goal of $75,000. Though the project goal is steep, you have to remember that animation ain’t cheap. Ideally, the project would like to raise $100k in order to fully produce the kind of film they want. And we think they deserve it. The kicker of Kickstarter is that it’s all-or-nothing funding, so if they don’t reach their 75k goal, the film doesn’t go into production.

We’re 99% sure that this film is an actual gift from God, so take our word when we say He’s totally fine with you skipping the donation plate this Sunday and giving the $10 to Hair Love. We want to see this film go into production, and if all it takes to make that happen is a small donation – who are we to block our blessings?
